Ok, so every once in a while, to feel current, I rewrite this page, and each time it gets shorter and shorter and often down a different path. This time it will be blunt. I am Randy Martin, and I am a carpenter. Yeah, it took me a long time to say that because I once had preconceptions of my own at it being a base profession. now I use the term often to simply fall into the shadows, even though I now see there are many forms and types of carpenters, and they all have their place. it is what it is, and yes like many professions I am certain I often find reason to fucking hate it. making sawdust, sanding sanding sanding, always a dirtbag, often not having the time or energy to create a real home for yourself. blah blah blah, but the fact is it can be a very honest way to make a living, and it can be so satisfying to work for oneself. For me I needed to get away from working for other people, and carpentry offered me the opportunity to work for myself without an education in a place that inspired me to live. I was never a trade oriented person, but heh, some things just fall into your lap, say like a carpentry apprenticeship when you’re 21 and travelling and broke. I said yes, and quickly discovered the current standard for track home building would never be for me. if I was going to stay in such a field I knew I would have to do something different, and so the design build thing became a quick and necessary pill to swallow. I know I should have a desire to embrace some aspects of the modern world better, say like design software, but to be honest I like paper napkin drawings or no drawings at all and a go with the flow vibe that allows for inspiration and change everyday. afterall, we could all benefit from the opportunity to even just allow ourselves to be open to change more often. I couldn’t of course be the kind of carpenter i am without recognizing that I am so blessed for all my clients who have let me live in this creative space and need to thank them for their trust and consideration and of course their time space and money. It’s been a good enough thing thus far, and for now I can’t see that changing. Anyway thanks all for coming out and enjoying and don’t be afraid to send a shout out or some links of things you come across that you think I may find inspiring. ciao, Randy
